Abstract

The African economy has been struggling to develop over the past years and the changes of leaders did not produce effective results to improve the economy. The COVID-19 pandemic further tripped the limping economy. This study explores the impact of covid-19 on the African economy and the increase in poverty. African people were living under unpleasant conditions before the covid-19 and African leaders have been trying to meet up with the needs of the people. Covid-19 forced African leaders to shift the focus from addressing the issues of poverty to focusing on saving lives. The objective of this study is to articulate how the pandemic has reversed the gains of African leaders in addressing poverty. African leaders might not have been able to win a fight against poverty in Africa but the covid-19 was a blow to prepared plans. Data onthe economic situation of Africa and the impact of covid-19 in Africa is available in various media platforms and academic work. Therefore, this study has applied secondary research methodology to attain related and relevant information from social media, online newspaper articles, government gazettes, and the latest journal articles and books on the impact of the covid-19. This study found that the debt made by most African leaders will haunt the African economy and the civilians will have to repay the debt for the next 20 to 50 years.
