Abstract

Surgical site infections are responsible for more than 20% of these infections, and it is the
most frequent Health care-related infections in middle-income and low-income countries. There is a lack
in studying of antibiotics use for surgical prophylaxis in Alkharj. Therefore, this study aims to assess the
appropriateness of surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis practices in a public hospital in Alkharj. The study
includes 2 parts; the first part includes a retrospective analysis of medical records and the second parts included a structured review with the physicians. The result of the present study shows that there is a problem in choosing the appropriate antibiotics for surgical prophylaxis in the hospital. Furthermore, the duration of antibiotic use in the hospital was largely inappropriate. It is important to start antimicrobial
stewardship programs to promote safe and effective use of antimicrobials and to increase the surgeon
awareness regarding the antibiotic use.
