Abstract

The lack of treatment options for multidrug resistant bacteria such as Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumonia and Pseudomonas aeruginosa has led to the use of colistin again as an antimicrobial therapy. Polymyxins have been considered the only option for the treatment of severe infections
caused by multidrug resistant A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa. This study aims to determine the resistance
of P. aeruginosa and A. baumannii to colistin in a public hospital in Alkharj, Saudi Arabia. Nowadays in
several regions these bacteria start developing resistance to colistin which is the best treatment of multidrug resistant Gram-negative organisms. Fortunately, till now the resistance rate of A. baumannii or P.
aeruginosa to colistin is low, so it is important to implement interventions to decrease its inappropriate
use. Moreover, it is important to increase the awareness of health care providers about colistin use.
