Abstract

Objectives:

The aim of this study was to compare the duration, quality and adverse effects of intravenous tramadol and intramuscular diclofenac for postoperative pain relief in patients undergoing ENT surgeries.

Methodology:

50 patients of ASA grade I & II of either sex aged between 18 and 65 years posted for ENT surgery under general anaesthesia were randomly selected. All surgeries were done under general anaesthesia. Patients were given either intravenous tramadol or intramuscular diclofenac just before extubation

Results:

The onset of analgesia in group T (12.64±2.07) was significantly faster than in group D (26.4±4.1). Duration of analgesia was significantly longer in group D (6.71±0.50) compared to group T (5.27±0.62). All patients were haemodynamically stable during the study period.Post operative complications were mild and same in both groups.

Conclusion:

Both intravenous tramadol (50 mg) and intramuscular diclofenac (75mg) have equal efficacy but the onset of analgesia was earlier with iv tramadol and duration of analgesia was longer with im diclofenac.
