Abstract

Developing countries have long relied on the use of medicinal plants or their bioactive compounds in their primary and traditional healthcare systems. These practices have been prevalent for a significant period and are rooted in ancient medicinal systems like Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani. Murraya Koenigii, an herb primarily originating from Asia, holds substantial medicinal importance and offers a wide range of therapeutic applications. These applications include treating bronchial disorders, piles, vomiting, skin diseases, and more. The medicinal properties of Murraya Koenigii have been particularly attributed to its leaves, stems, bark, and oil. Extensive research has been conducted on the pharmacology and phytochemistry of Murraya Koenigii, exploring the therapeutic potential of this plant. To compile and consolidate this body of knowledge, a comprehensive review has been developed. This review encompasses a description of Murraya Koenigii, its phytochemical constituents, various pharmacological activities exhibited by isolated compounds, and the bioactivity observed in extract studies conducted by multiple laboratories. Furthermore, the review highlights the potential of Murraya Koenigii to serve as an important nutraceutical for addressing diabetes and cardio protection concerns.
