Abstract

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by bacterial biofilms that affect the supporting structures of teeth. Ornidazole is an antimicrobial drug that can effectively treat periodontitis, but its low solubility limits its therapeutic efficacy. In this study, we optimized and evaluated ornidazole-loaded microsponges in a gel formulation for periodontal activity using the Box-Behnken design. The optimized ornidazole microsponges had drug content and entrapment efficiency of 78.1986±1.42, with a production yield of 70.549±1.27, and F25 was identified as the optimized batch. The ornidazole microsponges loaded in gel formulation with optimal custom design a had spreadability of 11.64±1.32, and drug release was 75.388±3.26, and the F1 batch was identified as the optimized batch. The findings suggest that ornidazole microsponges loaded in a gel formulation have the potential to be an effective treatment for periodontitis.
