Abstract

Hippeastrum puniceum, a member of the Amaryllidaceae family, is widely cultivated across the globe. Aim: The objective of this study was to isolate a triterpenoid from the ethanolic extract of H. puniceum and analyse its cytotoxic potential using the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line. Methods: Ethanolic extract was selected for compound isolation based on its superior cytotoxic activity in a preliminary trial using the trypan blue assay. The isolated compound was further characterized using FT-IR spectra, mass spectra, 13C NMR, and 1H NMR after being isolated through column chromatographic methods. The cytotoxic study on the MCF-7 cell line was examined using the MTT assay, and the IC50 value was determined. Results: The results showed that the isolated compound, oleanolic acid, had a milder effect on the cancer cells compared to the crude extract. This compound can be used as a potential agent for further progression and investigation of biological activities. Conclusion: This research successfully isolated oleanolic acid from the ethanolic extract of H. puniceum and analyzed its cytotoxic potential using the MCF-7 cell line. The compound displayed a milder cytotoxic effect compared with crude extract, suggesting the need for further investigation into other components within the extract and their potential synergistic effects. The isolated oleanolic acid can be used as a lead compound for additional research into its biological activities and potential therapeutic applications.
