Abstract

Background: The rising jellyfish populations are becoming a global concern. The bloom of this gelatinous zooplankton resulted from global warming and a shift in the marine ecosystem and has negative consequences for the economy and human health. Finding a solution for utilizing extra jellyfish eliminates not only jellyfish bloom but also encourages economic sustainability. Jellyfish bodies are rich in collagen and mucin, which have great promise as a cosmetics ingredient. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of jellyfish extract on the skin in order to provide a sustainable approach to the utilization of jellyfish.

Material and methods: In this study, the split-face, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled design was used. Twelve female volunteers aged 35-45 were recruited. They were randomly assigned a jellyfish extract (1% w/w) cream and a placebo cream to apply to the periorbital area for twelve weeks. The facial skin parameters on both sides were monitored and evaluated every four weeks. The facial wrinkles, skin elasticity and skin hydration were measured by Visioscan® VC98 USB, Cutometer® and Corneometer CM825®, respectively (Courage + Khazaka Electronic GmbH).

Results: The facial wrinkles and skin elasticity treated with jellyfish extract cream were significantly improved compared to the placebo cream at 4th week. The skin hydration treated with jellyfish extract cream was significantly improved after 8th week.

Conclusion: The jellyfish extract contains mucin and collagen content. Mucin has been used as a cosmetic ingredient for skin hydration, and collagen is often used to reduce wrinkles and increase skin elasticity.
