Abstract

The herb commonly known as Undirachakam and scientific name is Lactuca runcinata DC. The present study is to perform to investigate phytochemicals constitutions of extract prepared hydroalcoholic solution of the aerial parts of Lactuca runcinata DC.   The phytochemicals study of extract prepared by hydroalcoholic solution of the aerial parts of Lactuca runcinata DC by GCMS (SHIMAZDU QP 2010 ULTRA). The study shows the present total of 169 compounds. Out of 169 compounds, some are Beta carotene, Ergosterol, Vitamin E, Lathosterol, Stigmasterol, Germanicol, Lignoceric acid, Cetyl alcohol acetate, etc. Lactuca runcinata DC has traditional applicability for use as diuretics and liver diseases and bowel diseases. The antioxidant activity was also performed with the extract prepared hydroalcoholic solution of the aerial parts of Lactuca runcinata DC. The free radical scavenging activity was performed with free radical 2,2 Diphenyl Picryl Hydrazyl (DPPH) (SRL) by using a UV visible spectrophotometer (ANALYTICAL SPECTRO 2080). The free radical activity was performed by using Ascorbic acid as a standard drug. In vitro antioxidant activity was performed with 20,40,60,80,100 μg/ml concentrations of standard ascorbic acid and plant extract and calculate the % of inhibition and calculate the IC50 value by using λ max 518 nm in a UV visible spectrophotometer. The antioxidant study of extract prepared hydroalcoholic solution of the aerial parts of Lactuca runcinata DC shows significant antioxidant properties.
