Abstract

Background: Vrana is seen as a debilitating and scary disorder usually seen affecting human beings at any age. The major part of wound management in present days includes the prevention of sepsis, various types of bandages, etc. Even after the development of different techniques and methods for the treatment of wounds, still problems are persisting in the management. Ayurveda described different types of Vrana with clinical features, complications, and different treatment modalities. Material and Methods: Ayurvedic literature, modern texts as well as data web-based search engines, and journals, were used to search for relevant literature and information. Result: Vrana in modern parlance may be described as an inflammatory process that may lead to suppuration and ulceration. The three Doshas are the factors that undergo morbid changes and react to produce inflammation. The pain in any inflammatory state is ascribed to Vata, the process of suppuration to Pitta, and the formation of the pus to Kapha. The inflammatory stages are stated to follow a distinct pattern of evolutionary phases that is called Shadkriyakala. Conclusion: Samprapti of Vrana according to the Shadkriyakala was defined, followed by Shashthi Upakrama, the 60 types of Chikitsa described by Sushruta.
