Abstract

Microorganisms’ ability to alter electrochemical states at the metal-solution interface has an impact on corrosion. Such changes can have a range of effects, from the induction of corrosion to its suppression. Current corrosion control strategies are costly, subject to environmental constraints, and occasionally ineffective. Indeed, research indicates that microbial corrosion inhibition is a widespread phenomenon. Scientific progress at the crossroads of corrosion engineering and biofilm biology is required if this innovative approach is to be put into practice successfully. This article provides a summary of the mechanism of corrosion inhibition by microorganisms. Microorganisms’ involvement in corrosion inhibition causes a wide range of outcomes which are not seen in non-living environments.
