Abstract

Title: To identify the challenges and barriers while imparting health education in community among students from selected nursing institutes of Pune city. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to identify the challenges and barriers faced by nursing students when they plan and conduct health education. Methodology: Non-experimental descriptive research design was used. This study was conducted among students from selected nursing institutes of Pune city with sample size of 500. A self-structured questionnaire was used to identify the challenges and barriers of health education. The collected data was analyzed by using descriptive, frequency and percentages methods in statistics. Result: The following findings were revealed after data analysis. During health education the major challenges faced by students were dealing with a crowd of clients of different age groups, preparation of appropriate AV aids, time limitation of clients’, finding a favourable place for giving health education and overload with another clinical assignments or duties. During health education the major barriers faced by students were difficulty in translation of medical terms to local language, time limitation of clients, noise and distraction, difficulty in controlling the environmental factors and lack of time to evaluate client knowledge. Conclusion: The study showed that nursing students did experience various challenges and barriers while imparting health education. The challenges and barriers were in regards to students, teaching material, AV aids, clients, environment and evaluation. Identification of the challenges and barriers while imparting health education is an essential step which will aid in avoiding and overcoming these obstacles, and allow effective delivery of health education and create future nurses which are competent health educators.
