A descriptive study to assess the knowledge and attitude regarding contraception among nursing mothers in selected areas of Pune city

Abstract

Contraception refers to the deliberate use of various methods or devices to prevent pregnancy. It allows individuals and couples to have control over when or if they want to have children. Contraceptives allow people to space out their pregnancies, which can have health benefits for both the mother and child, as well as economic advantages for families. Proper contraceptive use can help prevent high-risk pregnancies, reducing maternal mortality rates and complications during childbirth. In choosing a method of contraception, dual protection from the simultaneous risk for HIV and other STDs also should be considered. Contraception is often considered a fundamental aspect of reproductive rights, allowing individuals and couples to make choices about when and if they want to have children. Comprehensive sex education and awareness about contraception are vital in helping individuals make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. Researcher  aimed to assess the knowledge  and attitude regarding contraception among nursing mothers in selected areas of Pune city and to associate its findings with selected demographic variables. The study employed a quantitative research approach, with a non - experimental exploratory design under non-probability purposive sampling procedures. A questionnaire containing 15 sets of questions and likert  scale was formulated and under the process of content validity, the questions were modified. Reliability demonstrated a high relevance of 0.9. The pilot study found that the investigation was easily feasible. Out of 200 nursing  mothers for the main study, the majority of 66.5%  had an average knowledge of contraception. 52.5% of the nursing mothers is 24 – 25 of age group. 58.5% of the nursing mothers are from HINDU religion. 44 % of the nursing mothers were educated higher secondary. 58% of the nursing mothers were home maker. 47% of the antenatal mothers family income is 20001 – 30000.64% of nursing mothers have one child 100% of nursing mothers had heard about contraception. 53% of nursing mothers had get information about contraception from health workers. 62% of nursing mothers had used contraception in past.. The findings of the study shows that nursing mothers who are susceptible to lack of knowledge and negative  about the contraception. Nursing professionals can take up this as a challenge to improve the knowledge of mothers about the contraception which will ultimately developed positive attitude towards contraception.
