Abstract

Objective: The prevalence of vaginal infections and pH imbalance among women has become a growing concern, leading to various diseases such as vaginitis and urinary tract infections. One traditional medicinal plant, Calotropis gigantea (mandar), possesses a range of beneficial properties including antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. We aimed to explore the potential of Calotropis gigantea, we embarked on a comprehensive research project.

Methods: Our study began with the collection of plant samples and vaginal flora samples from a diverse group of 100 women, including both rural and urban populations. Isolation of bacterial strains from the collected vaginal flora samples, representing both positive and negative strains associated with vaginal infections and pH imbalance. Subjected the isolated bacterial strains to qualitative and quantitative analysis to determine the antibacterial activity of Calotropis gigantea. Conducted a DPPH test to evaluate the antioxidant properties of the Calotropis gigantea plant extract and analyzed the phytochemicals present in Calotropis gigantea using suitable analytical techniques.

Results: The antibacterial activity analysis revealed the potential of Calotropis gigantea in inhibiting the growth of bacterial strains associated with vaginal infections and pH imbalance.

The DPPH test demonstrated the antioxidant properties of the plant extract, suggesting its ability to combat oxidative stress. Phytochemical analysis identified specific compounds in Calotropis gigantea that may contribute to its antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects.

Conclusion: The results of this test have laid the foundation for our future work, specifically in the development of products such as herbal intimate washes and related cosmetics. Additionally, we seek to identify the phytochemicals present in this plant and explore their potential in combating vaginal pathogens while restoring a healthy vaginal flora balance.

By harnessing the beneficial properties of Calotropis gigantea, we aspire to develop safe and effective natural products that can promote women's health and well-being.
