A quasi-experimental study to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme regarding BE FAST technique among the care takers of elderly patients in selected hospitals of Pune city

Abstract

Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability world-wide. The early detection of stroke in the prehospital setting has the potential to improve stroke outcomes by decreasing delays in treatment Stroke scales designed for the prehospital setting have a lower number of diagnostic criteria, easy-to-identify clinical signs and simplicity of implementation, making them applicable for use by first aid providers and lay persons. Aim of the study: To assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme regarding BE FAST technique among the care takers of elderly patients. Material and method: Quantitative research approach and quasi experimental with pre-test post-test control group design was used 220 care takers of elderly patients were selected by purposive sampling technique. 110 samples were in experimental group and 110 samples were in control group. Data collected through structured questionnaire was done. Experimental group received intervention as structured teaching programme regarding BE FAST technique. Results: The descriptive and inferential statistical were used for the analysis of data under the study. It was found that structured teaching programme was effective for the care takers of elderly patients. Pro-test knowledge regarding BE FAST technique among the care takers of elderly patients before structured teaching programme in experimental group. Majority 71.826 care takers were having average knowledge, 24.55% care takers were having good knowledge and 3.64% care takers were having poor knowledge Majority 60% care takers were having average knowledge. 30% care takers were having poor knowledge and 1.82% care takers were having good knowledge in control group. Post test knowledge regarding BE FAST technique among the care takers of elderly patients after structured teaching programme in experimental group. Majority 54.55% care takers were having good knowledge and 45.45% care takers were having average knowledge and in control group. Majority 64 55% care takers were having average knowledge, 30.91% care takers were having poor knowledge and 4.55% care takers were having good knowledge.
