A study to assess the effectiveness of information booklet on knowledge regarding pediatric palliative care among parents from selected hospitals of Pune city

Abstract

Parents of children with a life-limiting disease have to rely on themselves at home while adequate pediatric palliative care is lacking. In several countries, pediatric palliative care teams are introduced to ensure continuity and quality of care and to support the child and the family. Yet, little is known about how parents experience such multidisciplinary teams.Aim of study: “A study to assess the effectiveness of Information booklet on knowledge Regarding pediatric palliative care Among parents from selected hospitals Of Pune city.” Material and Methods: Pre-experimental One group pre test post test design was used. It was carried out on 160samples. The non-probability purposive sampling technique was used to select samples. Result: Study showsmajority of parents 88 (55%) belongs to 30 – 34 years of age group, Among parents,96 (60%) were male and 105 (65%) resides in urban area, regarding educational statusmajorly parents 60 (37.5%) were having secondary education and Majorly 153(93.75%) were not having any history of life limiting disease/genetical disorder in family. Inradiation exposure majority of parents 155 (97%) were not exposed to any harmful radiation/chemical of mother during pregnancy but 5 (3%) mothers were exposed to radiation duringpregnancy.Before the intervention majority of Parents 75% having poor knowledge and 25% has Average knowledge about Pediatric palliative care in before intervention. After intervention majority of parents 74% having good knowledge, 20% having Average knowledge and 7% having poor knowledge about Pediatric palliative care. Conclusion:Findings shows that comparison of pre and post intervention that the pre intervention mean score was 6.53 with SD 3.7 that was increased after the intervention which was 17.04 with SD 4.62. The resulted paired t-test statistic value is 22.43, while corresponding p-value was <0.0001, which is small (less than 0.05). It shows that the information booklet was effective.
