Ayurvedic Management of Indralupta (Alopecia areata) through Internal and External Medications – A Case Report

Abstract

Alopecia areata, also known as spot baldness, is a condition in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body. In AA, the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, causing inflammation. This condition is explained as Indralupta in Ayurved.  Here a 32-year-old female who visited our OPD withcomplain ofa recent hair fall and around 5 to 6 small round patches over the scalp with no hair and was shiny. Exclamation marks hair with round patchy hair loss is the most peculiar feature of Alopecia. Thus A clinical Diagnosis was made as Indralupta [Alopecia Areata] and patient was treated with Malatyadikerataila, GandhakRasayanvati, Vidangaarishta for three months. It was found that from the 4th day of medication itching in the scalp started decreasing and within a week her itching completely stopped. After two and half weeks small black hair started growing in the patchy area of the scalp and after one and a half months all patches disappeared and healthy hair was growing on the scalp area.
